昨天我工作一年了。  很长吗？我听说这是很段的时间工作。  但是这也是我最长的时间只作一个计划。  在大学我的计划都是三个月的。  虽然这是很长的我有时候觉得我不太孳。  我觉得这个感情是因为工作总是有别的问题。  我做完一个问题就开始别的。  很有意思的感情。  我想一个“feeling of completion”。

hmm有别的吗？  有。  今天晚上我看了我的姐姐的履历表。  我体认了我喜欢读履历表。  上大学的时候我做这么多面试所以我也想一想我的履历表。  用LaTeX写。  我觉得我现在知道很多履历表的东西。  要是你想我帮你，当然可以。

今天我也看了我的同事的blog。Lis是一个公司的作家所以她的日记很好。  名字是A Millenial Speaks。  我建议这个。

明天我要写很多中文的电脑工具。  我现在用了很多。

The World’s Oldest Jokes

I doubt it really is (especially since the last one comes from a whole book of jokes), but it’s fascinating to see what people find funny over time.

Actually, the hardest part of going to dim sum with this particular group of friends is that the servers always speak to Sally first, and when she’s on the other side of the table, I probably couldn’t hear what they were saying, even if it was English.

Erin likes eating dim sum with me for two reasons: 1. Apparently hearing me speak Chinese is funny. 2. MIT people have interesting conversations. Today we couldn’t help spilling the tea quite a few times, so we talked about how to improve the conventional teapot. I was initially in favor of a mechanical redesign, but by the end of the meal, Sally had convinced me that new, hydrophobic materials were the answer to our dilemma…

Just wanted to write a note that you should check my flickr site for photos.  I don’t always have time to fully edit these posts and include everything, so there are a lot there that you may not have seen.

After breakfast, we walked downtown a while, since we were planning on an 11:15 walking tour.  Laura and I changed some money at the Bank of Ireland, while Mom finally bought some of the Irish wool scarves that she’d been eyeing.

The walking tour didn’t end up being much of a walk, but it was very interesting.  Our guide, Barry Maloney,  apparently studied history in school, so he definitely knew what he was talking about.  He told us about the battle of Kinsale, in which an Irishman traded information about the Irish and Spaniards’ sneak attack on the English for a case of whiskey, thereby thwarting the fifth Spanish Armada and Ireland’s shot at independence.

This afternoon, we travelled to the Rock of Cashel, which is where St. Patrick baptised the Kind of Munster in the 400s.  In 1101, the land was given over to the church to use as Ecclesiastical ground.  It was in use from then until the 1800s and is still used as a cemetery today.  Sadly, it was overcast and rainy, so I didn’t get many good pictures.

According to Marginal Revolution, this is a good test of how sensitive you are to how others see you.  If you draw the ‘Q’ away from you (so that others can read it), you’re more concerned than if you draw it facing you.  Alex Tabarrok goes on to say that this also implies whether you are a good liar or not, but I’m not sure about that; it seems a little simplistic.

Gone With the Wind: The Perfect Book?

My purpose in writing this blog is to practice writing and thinking critically as well as to represent myself on cyberspace. To that respect, I’ve set up a number of categories that I think will be useful:

• personal: Just what it sounds like – events from my life. I don’t think I’ll post to this category very often. http://daugherty.mit.edu/category/personal
• tech: Current tech news/my thoughts on technology and technology trends. This will probably be mainly web-oriented software news, but you never know. http://daugherty.mit.edu/category/tech
• my-software: Any updates or thoughts on software on which I am currently working. Hopefully with links to really cool prototypes that you will enjoy trying out. http://daugherty.mit.edu/category/tech/my-software
• mit: Events at the institute, thoughts on classes, speeches, career fairs, etc. http://daugherty.mit.edu/category/mit

Also, one of the cool features of WordPress is that it supports RSS feeds for almost everything on the site. I know I have a few readers who aren’t as familiar with some of this technology as I am, so here’s a quick explanation on how to use it, with an example of adding my site to your Google homepage.

First, find the URL for a feed about any page for which you would like to receive updates. Just append “feed” to the end of the URL. For example, the feed for my main site is http://daugherty.mit.edu/feed, and the feed for the personal category is http://daugherty.mit.edu/category/personal/feed.

Second, go to your personalized homepage in Google and click “add more to this page >>” in the upper left corner. Now, click “add by URL” to the right of the search box. Finally, type in the URL you created before into the box and click “Add”. Navigate back your homepage and check it out. Cool, huh?

My next steps with the blog will be to start posting more, to customize the appearance, and to add a few more static pages about me. Thanks for checking out my new blog; I hope you enjoy it!
