Thank you Dennis! In fact it helped a lot. With the name I was able to find a reference to the old name of the Dutch institution to which it belongs, with which I found its new name (Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage, or ICN: www.icn.nl) and used their "contact us" to ask about it, or you can e-mail info@icn.nl. They confirmed that it is still on loan to the Van Gogh Museum, that it belongs to ICN with inventory number E428, and they even sent me a jpeg of it! Good enough quality for my computer wallpaper, but not so good to print out a larger image. I would love to post it here, but since the e-mail's legal area said getting the jpeg doesn't give me any rights to it, I feel uncomfortable about it. I am sure if you contact them, they will send you one as well. They also said that if I want a professional image of it, I could e-mail a request to their staff photographer, Tim Koster (tim.koster@icn.nl). I did that several days ago but have had no answer from him yet. If I do get any more details I'll pass them on...

My husband loved that painting (it was a soldier in the snow, right?) I wrote to the Van Gogh Museum years ago asking about it, and if it is the same one, I was told it was by Rene Princeteau and that it was on loan from an art museum in The Hague (looks like a permanent loan, it's been at least 10 years since I saw it!) I seem to remember they told me the title was "Hussar in the Snow", but I have had no luck finding any prints or even images of it anywhere under that name or the one you give here. If anyone out there knows where to find one, please post it here! Thank you...

hi. I was hoping i could get some help. i found this blog entry doing a search for "dragoon on watch" - i can't seem to find a copy of the image. Unlike you, they didn't have any prints available. Like you, that painting was the highlight of the museum, the trip, all of it.

thanks much.
